Quotes
Add a Quote"The level of intensity fluctuates according to time and place, but it can be stated as a truth that religion does not, and in the long run cannot, be content with its own marvelous claims and sublime assurances. It must seek to interfere with the lives of nonbelievers, or heretics, or adherents of other faiths. It may speak about the bliss of the next world, but it wants power in this one. This is only to be expected. It is, after all, wholly man-made. And it does not have the confidence in its own various preachings even to allow coexistence between different faiths." (p.22)

Good read. I agree treat the content was not as well organized as The God Delusion.
This is a terrific read. Not too pedantic but with enough acadamic and historical reference so as not to insult the intelligence of the readers. I laughed out loud at some of his examples of the simplicty and naiveity of the fundamentalit mind of any religious persuasion. Sorry about the other comments, "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still". Read this book as a history not as an anti religion tract. It is humerous and sad; intellectually frustrating and stimulating. RIP Chris Hitchens. You have made this world a better place by your passing through.
Main theme of the book is that if we replace religion with open-mindedness and open ideas then world would be a much better place.
The real tragedy of this book is that you have to slog through Hitchens's tedious and self-important writing style to get to all of the thought-provoking ideas and interesting information contained within. Hitchens makes his arguments by pulling examples from an impressive range of subjects and, regardless of whether or not you agree with what he's saying, the sheer breadth of material covered is worth the effort required to endure his bloated literary technique.
1949-2011. Rest in Peace, While this book does have some interestesting insights into why religion itself isn't benefitial to contemporary society, I do not agree with his conclusion. I don't agree that militaristic actions should be placed upon cultures that differ from our own (religious or not), but I do find his examination of religion and its relevance enlightening.
Very thought-provoking!
This book is very poorly written. First off there are errors riddled throughout the book. For example on page 17 Hitchens argues that Anglicans have a responsibility for the crusades. The Anglican Church wasn't even around until hundreds of years after the Crusades had ended. Aside from this, one of the biggest problems is that Hitchens is constantly saying that religion is immoral. To do this Hitchens is borrowing from a religious world-view to attack it. He is contradicting himself. In Hitchens world-view nothing is good, and nothing is bad. Everything is subjective, and there is no absolute right or wrong. So for him to argue this way shows he cannot live out his own world-view, and has failed from the start.
this is an excellent book! Christopher Hitchens knows what he is saying, and backs it up with evidence. In the book, Hitchens, a master with words, explains and shows via example that belief in god makes people do irrational things and that religion, as the title says, poisons everything. Citing example after example, he shows how faith and belief in a god can only make people act in completely crazy and dangerous ways. 'God Is Not Great' is a book that I recommend to anyone who is rational and has an open mind
Wow, not a fan, you should check out a better book, "The Case For Christ", by Lee Strobel, a former athiest.
