Add a QuoteThe question every young writer at some point asks is: “What should I write?” And the standard answer is, “Write what you know.” This advice always leads to terrible stories in which nothing interesting happens. . . . The best advice is not to write what you know, it’s to write what you like. Write the kind of story you like best – write the story you want to read.
One thing I’ve learned in my brief career: It’s the side projects that really take off. By side projects I mean the stuff that you thought was just messing around. Stuff that’s just play. That’s actually the good stuff. That’s when the magic happens.
If you have two or three real passions, don’t feel like you have to pick and choose between them. Don’t discard. Keep all your passions in your life.
It’s so important to have a hobby. A hobby is something creative that’s just for you. You don’t try to make money or get famous off it, you just do it because it makes you happy.
“The artist is a collector. Not a hoarder, mind you, there's a difference: Hoarders collect indiscriminately, artists collect selectively. They only collect things that they really love.”

I can't believe it took me this long to read this book. It was a birthday gift from a friend years ago and it came at the perfect time right now. What a lovely, beautiful, inspiration of a book. I can't recommend it enough for a quick, dose of get off your butt and go make things. It's perfect for just that.
Super easy quick read. Though it had a LOT of thought provoking moments. I love it when a book puts complex ideas or philosophies into simple, understandable words. Showing how something so intense really isn't so hard to understand from the right perspective.
I really enjoy this guy's sense of humor as well as his take on artistic creativity. HIs basic principle is definitely easy to figure out from the start of the book.
Anyway, without giving too much away, I would definitely recommend this book to any artist from any area or stage of life who wants to be reminded of the stunning beauty of being creative!
Basic wisdom for art and for life. A quick read not full of extraneous fluff. 5 stars.
If you are a creative of any sort and you struggle with your art or should I say the practice of your art then this book is for you. Simple and elegant...if this small book doesn't get you off your backside and motivate you to do your craft then nothing will. Highly recommended.
A quick read; partway through I realized there are a lot of my artist-friends I want to give it to!
This is poorly bound so be careful because the pages will fall right out.
It's probably too small to be truly helpful as it doesn't go into any depth at all in its recommendations, but its tips are still very useful for any artist (anyone in a creative field), especially students.
This book concisely reiterated a lot of sentiments I took away from several art professors while working on my degree, and I can confidently say that they are 100% conducive to my creative process. Kleon kindly reminds us that we don't have to be revolutionary artistic prodigies to be great artists. I would highly recommend this to anyone that ever gets artists' block or anyone that feels discouraged by trying to become a "successful" artist. Human and kind, this book is both comforting and inspiring.
Honest, simple read. Totally absorbable and insanely inspiring. Love it!
Very interesting book... It is a little confusing but funny at the same time.
