Great easy read for anyone who enjoys a real life story of adventure and survival. After reading you will appreciate all that is available to us in this day in age and how easy we have it. The story is about a young boys true story of following his brother and father up to northern Ontario to start a homestead and live the pioneer life. It is truly remarkable they all survived living in the harshness of Northern Ontario over 100 years ago.
May 2016, I bought this book in 2013, but never got around to reading it until now. I found it a nice easy read with some pretty amazing feats from a young man. Certainly makes me appreciate my lifestyle now. He and his father and brother ate just about anything they could get their hands on, and if they couldn't get their hands on anything, they didn't eat! I like turnips (rutabagas) but I can't imagine eating them day in day out for a couple of months, and then putting in a full days work chopping trees and constructing in the mean time. Let alone trekking through the snow for 36 hours or so on some errand.......I guess that is why he bailed out after just 5 years! (Traded that life for a knitting mill......yeah, that's better?) Anyway a pretty amazing life, and the story about how the book came about is almost just as amazing!
