On January 12, 2010, novelist Dany Laferriere has just ordered dinner at a Port-au-Prince restaurant with a friend when the earthquake struck. He survived, but some 300,000 others did not. The quake caused widespread disruption and left over one million homeless; it also revealed flaws in the impoverished nation's infrastructure that will take a generation from which to recover. This moving and revelatory book is an eyewitness account of the quake and its aftermath.

I do not agree that this is an opportunistic book. Dany Laferriere is Haitian so it's actually refreshing hearing the perspective of things Haitian from actual Haitians. Yes, great that others write about Haiti, but who knows Haiti best. I love hearing the voice of those that have not been heard. It makes sense for Haitians to write about Haiti.

Opportunistic book. Unfinished and disorganized. The introduction by Michaelle Jean is awful.

I had the pleasure of meeting this author and I have anticipated this book for a while. Dany is very smart and funny and other titles by him are worth the read. They are: "Heading South", "The Return" and "How to make love to a negro without getting tired." Awesome stuff :)
