After the emotional, raw ride of The Underside of Joy, I needed something light and fluffy. Thankfully, this fit the bill without being annoyingly sweet or sappy. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised that the story focused as much (possible more) on the themes of friendship and understanding yourself when the lens of how others see you is removed than it did on romance.

This one hit me personally, because while my best friend never disappeared on me back then (thank goodness- I'd have been more of a wreck than Emily was), she did exit my life as adults, without explanation or warning. Life is, basically, a lack of closure, but it's difficult when your rock drops out.

Emily felt very real, as did Frank (which, honestly, I think I went to school with Frank, although he was called Kevin back then and he was the king of the IB/AP courses). There were some bizarre and larger-than-life characters, but considering this is a contemporary YA, they served their purpose of adding color to the environment.

Overall, it was a sweet and swift read, pretty much perfect for summer. I recommend it for fans of YA contemporary stories, although I may be the last person in North America to have read this.

I absolutely adored this book! I was so immersed in it that I finished it in a day, despite my mother's complaints that I read too much. But this book was honestly more enjoyable to read than John Green's Paper Towns, which I found myself comparing it to on a couple of occasions. In a summary, Emily receives a To-Do list from her suddenly missing friend, of things for her to do that she would usually never do. This was a beautiful book about self-discovery, with a bit of romance kindling below the surface. I would recommend this to anyone above 12 years of age, as it is very relatable and touching. 5/5

I really enjoyed this young adult romance novel. Emily is devastated when her best friend Sloane leaves town without a word. They have been inseparable friends and Emily is lost without her. Then a letter arrives from Sloane setting out challenges for Emily to complete, things she would never have dared to do without Sloane by her side. As Emily works her way through the list, she realises her confidence is growing, she is making new friends and life is improving, until her feelings for Frank change.

Since You’ve Been Gone is about a shy, teenage girl named, Emily, whose best friend, Sloane, had disappeared at the beginning of summer. Her best friend left her a list of tasks for her to complete. In order for Emily to find her best friend, she had to complete a list that Sloane had left for her and by the end. Each task on the list, took Emily on a new adventure where she learnt to take risks and become more care-free. During her summer without her best friend, Emily meets new friends who help her complete the list.
I loved this books for so many reasons. The first reason is that Emily was a very relatable character. She relates to people who are shy and who never step out of their comfort zone. When she was scared and too shy to face her fears, the feelings she had were so relatable to many teens who are struggling to step out of their comfort zone.
Another reason why I really enjoyed this book was because of how every adventure Emily went on was so interesting and very intriguing. While reading this book, I so interested in knowing how every task would end and how Emily ended up stepping out of her comfort zone and become more courageous. I couldn't put the book down, it was so intriguing.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventurous books with a little bit of romance.

I've never understood what reviewers meant when they said that a book has "charm," but after reading SYBG I finally get it. This book isn't intense or edge-of-your-seat material, like the scifi/fantasy I usually read, but it's super charming and sweet. When I first got it I was a little hesitant due to its length, but I enjoyed it immensely and finished in less than two days! Go try it out.

I couldn't get through this book. The writing style was awful. Some of the worst dialogue and character building I've seen in a long time. I'm so tired of authors totally hamming up how awkward their characters are without actually making people react realistically to their awkwardness. The story itself was pretty superficial - a girl trying to push herself to do the things she normally wouldn't, without much deeper contemplation.

“He looked right at me as he gave me a half smile. "You're the brightest thing in the room", he said. He lifted his hand from my waist, and slowly, carefully brushed a stray lock of hair from my cheek. "You shine".

"There was that tension between us again, but it wasn't the shimmering, angry kind that had been there before. This felt like the way you get nervous right before something exciting happens - the moment when you're balanced on the top of the roller coaster, the hush before the surprise party, the second after the diving board but before the water, when you can close your eyes and imagine, just for a second that you are flying. The feeling that good things are coming, almost here, any moment now."

Emily's best friend has disappeared, leaving behind a to-do list for her to accomplish. The list forces Emily out of her comfort zone, from being shy and awkward to becoming more confident and playful. It's not about being a rebel- it's about trying new things, making new friends, and discovering where the little things can take you. It's about not simple existing as someone's sidekick, it's about living.
