Darker story than I expected. I was disappointed that the magic stuff was only a little bit of the story. Really dark, major consequences to the magic too like the character that got cursed to gastrointestinal problems omg...
Melodramatic and not a happy story. It felt like many of the characters blamed fate or circumstance for their unhappiness, when it seemed like they could've done things differently and all had happier lives.

The idea of a man marrying one sister because he loves another who he is not allowed to marry seems kind of creepy. A modern but more realistic and similar situation is a man who is married to one woman and then falls in love with another. If there are children it is even more modern. This kind of love is very common, and the world is full of this infidelity. From that point of view the story is real and pwerful. It is the man's fate that is tragic here, and the women are strong and survive, although not all. How refreshing to see men portrayed as the weaker sex and women the stronger!

1992 Mexican film based on Lara Esquivel's beloved novel of love, family, and food. This was part of a small wave of Mexican films in the 90s, which also included "El Mariachi" and "Cronos." Director Alfonso Arau might be better known as an actor who made memorable appearances in 80s classics "Three Amigos" and "Romancing the Stone." Also, he was married to Esquivel. Don't eat this on an empty stomach!

One of those rare cross-culturally epic love story about a woman's life long journey that was bounded by an obscure family tradition. Hollywood has yet to remake this film which appeared to be a faithful adaptation of the 1989 Mexican novel. Per Wiki:

The novel follows the story of a young girl named Tita, who longs for her lover, Pedro, but can never have him because of her mother's upholding of the family tradition: the youngest daughter cannot marry, but instead must take care of her mother until she dies. Tita is only able to express herself when she cooks.

Esquivel employs magical realism to combine the supernatural with the ordinary throughout the novel.

This is one of my favourite movies of all times. I just love all the characters, it is wonderfully cast. The food scenes are excellent as are the music selections. It is a sad love story though. Highly, highly recommend it, you won't be disappointed.

An entertaining film which gives insight to the prejudices of the past.

Little star
Of a distant
That sees my pain
That knows my suffering
Come down and tell me
If you love me a lot
Or just a little
Tita knew how contact with fire alters elements. How dough becomes a tortilla and that a breast untouched by love's fire just isn't a breast, but a useless ball of dough. In one instant, Pedro had transformed Tita's breasts from chaste to voluptuous without even touching them.
Your love is one of the truest loves I know.
Do you love him more than you love me?
-When you're not here, I feel that he's the one I love. But when I see you,
everything changes. With you, I feel calm, safe, at peace...

My grandmother, Morning Star, who was a Kickapoo Indian, used to say that we're all born with a box of matches inside. We can't light them by ourselves. Just like in this experiment, we need oxygen and the help of a candle. Except that in our case, the oxygen has to come, for example, from a lover's breath. The candle can be anything. A melody, a word, a caress, a sound. Just anything. Anything that pulls the trigger and sets off one of the matches. Every person has to discover what will pull his trigger to enable him to live. Because it is the explosive flare of a match that feeds our souls. If there's nothing to trigger the explosion, our box of matches becomes damp and then we'll never be able to light any of them. There are many ways to dry a damp match box. You can rest assured there is a cure. Of course, it's important to light the matches one at a time. ...

IMDb has a few quotes from years ago ... should be updated with more:

"The onion must be chopped finely. I suggest that you put a piece of onion on the crown of your head to avoid the annoying crying that is caused by chopping it. The trouble with crying while chopping onions isn't the crying. It's that sometimes you can't stop.
At this point, you've got three daughters. When are you going to make a son?
When Tita felt Pedro's burning gaze upon her shoulders, she understood exactly how raw dough must feel when it comes in contact with boiling oil. The heat that invaded her was so real that she feared that, just like dough, bubbles would break out all over her body, on her stomach, her heart, her breasts.
But I think that's not fair. You don't think. And that's that! Never, for generations, has anyone in our family ever questioned this tradition. My daughter won't be the first!
