Elin Hilderbrand did exactly what she promised to do with her 'Author's Note' in 'Winter in Paradise', which was to celebrate her beloved St. John, USVI. She did it beautifully with explicit and dream worthy descriptions. For that 'Winter in Paradise' gets an A+. I believe that was her major goal with the story line secondary

I wish her unlikely and somewhat unlikeable story lived up to those descriptions. There is just nothing realistic about 'Winter in Paradise' from the trite plot to the falling in love of every major character. Some grief/grieving. Everything about the story is fantastical - not uninteresting just unbelievable. Have the characters ever heard of DNA testing, especially in lieu of the surrounding mystery and non-answers to questions they occasionally bother ask? Even the title is simply wrong as it's not a WINTER but only 7 days 'in paradise'.

I think 'Winter in Paradise' is merely a vehicle to introduce us to the Virgin Islands and clearly the prologue, as unsatisfactory as it is, to the sequels.

3.5 stars and I will give the sequels a chance with the hope they live up to Hilderbrand's other works as this one did not.

And you think your family has problems? Try looking inside the Steele family. There's husband Russ who is away on business so much that his 50-something wife, Irene, daydreams about turning their home into a bed and breakfast just so she can have other people around. Then there are their two grown sons, Baker and Cash, neither of whom can stand each other. And while author Elin Hilderbrand manages to surround these facts with something resembling a plot, this novel is really about the Steeles and little more. The pace is good and the setting--St. John's in the Caribbean--is beautiful. Still, the way the reader is left hanging at the end of the book feels like a naked attempt on the author's part to sell a lot of whatever novel comes next. So if you plan on making this book a beach read, my advice is that you wait until the follow-up is published and then have both with you as you lay in the sun. Maybe that way you'll get some answers to questions that Hilderbrand leaves hanging.

An expected murder thriller, turned into a romance mystery... well, only a part 1. Having been fed plenty at a cheesy book event, I might become partial, for a change, to a genre I'd otherwise avoid.
Perfect read for 2019 post-holiday retreat. The speech lingo became a episodic boredom, the plot stayed a lure. Each of many characters is perfect for his/her flaws, with little hint of self-serving. Like chewing a bittersweet chocolate - I even contemplated briefly something deep such as "life as a journey" - ended up with a core of marshmallow.
From what happened here in the first week of Jan 2019, I may be curious to read part 2.

Exciting new trilogy now that the Quinn saga on Nantucket is finished. Lots of open endings left to be discovered in the next two volumes. Change of setting to a Caribbean island makes for a perfect getaway read in cold February in the North.

I do love to read Elin Hilderbrand's stories, and was really glad to see a new location setting, however I get somewhat tired of the constant namedropping: Restaurants, hotels, bars, beaches. Does she get a kickback every time a place is mentioned? That being said, this was an enjoyable read, a virtual holiday in cold cold February.

Always love her books. Excited that she took us to a new location. The intricate story made it a page turner.

Another good book by Elin Hilderbrand but I get a little tired of men having secret lives. Either devote to your current family or divorce your wife and marry your mistress.

I usually hate (put that in capitals!) romance novels, but I really enjoy Hilderbrand's books, even though they're set in some unrealistic (meaning emphatically not middle-class) settings. As I finished Winter in Paradise I was frustrated by the lack of an ending -- now I know it's a trilogy. There are enough threads left hanging and an interesting assortment of interesting characters to put my imagination into high gear.

Loved, loved it. Read in two days. Love the way she develops the characters and writing style. Didn't care if there wasn't a follow up book, but glad there is.

What better way to spend a cold winter day (and night) than curl up with a book set in Paradise no less? What's better is that the book "Winter in Paradise" is written by Elin Hildebrand. The novel starts with Irene Steele hearing about the death of her husband in a plane crash on New Year's day. If this is a shock, what comes as a bigger shock is that Russ Steele seems to have had a secret life. Irene can't believe that her husband who seemed to dote on her was hiding a huge secret. The novel segues to Irene's sons Baker and Cash and their reaction to their father's death. We head to the tropics - the US Virgin Islands, and the locale seems to weave its own magic on the family. New characters are introduced and now every member of the family has his or her own secret. This leads Irene to beseech her family, "please do not keep secrets." Cash sums up the situation best when he ruminates, "Funny we've been here less than a week and we know everyone else's personal drama." Ultimately it's their own personal drama that trumps them all. Also, just as we were aching for closure, we find the novel ends in a cliffhanger - can't wait for the sequel!
