Add a CommentWinchester is a world treasure. This (audio) book was utterly fascinating. I hung on every well-enunciated word by a master story teller. I was looking for something that would give context to a forthcoming trip to the South and Central Pacific. This did it for me!
Simply the best audiobook I ever heard! I am now going to listen to the authors other audio books. It turns out the Pacific Ocean has had a fascinating history!
IMO SW is a terrific historian, with unusual 'tid-bits' of info. I've read nearly all his books available to me, starting with the factual history of making the OED, a fascinating tale, which I'll read again. Pacific is packed with his usual - unusual - details. At first I have some difficulty with his accent of the 'posh', but get mesmerized by the details. His is straight forward, often cynical, can be satirical, possibly critical with reason. I've gained much from his books.
think of this as a story told by an eccentric uncle. quirky yet can be quite insightful.
