After fleeing Virginia, Temperance Tucker and her family established an inn along the Shawnee River. It's a welcome way station for settlers and frontiersmen traveling through the wild Cumberland region of Kentucke--men like Sion Morgan, a Virginia surveyor who arrives at the inn with his crew looking for an experienced guide. When his guide appears, Sion balks. He certainly didn't expect a woman. But it is not long before he must admit that Tempe's skill in the wilderness rivals his own. Still, the tenuous tie they are forming is put to the test as they encounter danger after danger and must rely on each other. With her signature sweeping style and ability to bring the distant past to vivid life, Laura Frantz beckons readers to join her in a land of Indian ambushes, conflicting loyalties, and a tentative love that meanders like a cool mountain stream.

Yes, this does deal with sad topics of loss but shows hope can prevail. Interesting to see the different sides of frontier settlement, and the cost to both the settlers and Indians. I liked this book a great deal and felt I could identify with the heroine processing sadness in her life, and the journey of moving forward. Well worth reading! I've really enjoyed the style of this author.

Unfortunately this was probably one of my least favorite books by Laura Frantz. Usually I can’t put the book down once I start, but I had trouble following the plot and getting into it. The story goes back and forth between present and past events, it was difficult at times to know if it was happening now or in the past. Several times throughout the story there were thoughts of suicide and while it didn’t occur, its still kind of a dark, melancholy story. I still love Laura Frantz and will continue to read her books but just wanted to share my thoughts.
