This is a tough one...
As many previous posts have outlined, it follows a young girl and her 'adventures'. It is hard to watch this and remain OK with society and the way in which we treat vulnerable families and children. The lack of tools that gets past down from generation to generation seems to remove the option of escaping the cycle of poverty and addiction. The film reflects this in its story arc (there is almost no arc)- they are going no where and the film sort of does that too- I think it is on purpose.
We knew that it was not a documentary, but it was filmed as though it were but without the direction of a documentary. It was so realistic that it seemed incomprehensible that it was not live action (reality). I was so surprised that my husband wanted to continue watching this film as normally I am the one who is more interested in 'art' or more experimental film such as indie film or foreign films.
After watching the ALL bonus materials (which I highly recommend) we gained a huge appreciation for it as art and social comment. This is not a block buster and probably only appreciated by those seeking and interested in developing a broader understanding of our world and those that we share it with.

There isn't really a "plot" to this movie as such, so don't expect one.
It's as if there is a hidden camera "capturing life" in a poverty situation one step
above homelessness in a motel right next to Disneyland in Florida.
Personally, I loved the kids, bratty as they were, and thought Willam Defoe was
great as the manager trying to run a tight ship........but with a heart.
The ending was a bit corny but the rest of it so good I could forgive that.
I loved the movie and will watch it again sometime.

Beautiful. poignant. depressing. are just a few adjectives to describe this film. Cast is almost all non-actors who did incredible work. The director does a great job of just letting the audience live in this sad world outside the "happiest place on Earth". It deserved all the awards love! rent it!

Ignore the negative comments and people who complain about "likable" characters (Is Macbeth likable? Is Captain Ahab likable?). Sean Baker is one of the most empathetic filmmakers working today and one of the few who deals with characters living at the margins of the American dream. His first features, "Tangerine," was shot entirely on an iPhone. This one is a little more polished, but still has the same mix of lyricism and grit. Set in and around a dingy Florida apartment complex (That is close to Disney World), this follows a troubled single mother and her spirited daughter. Willem Dafoe plays the gruff, but decent manager. It's a film of moments rather than narrative, and while it doesn't have a conventional plot or flinch from what some find "depressing" material, I found it quite compelling and heartfelt. One of last year's best films.

Thumbs down for this movie. I thought the kids and adults did a good job with acting, but I just didn't like the plot very much. While I understand it's probably based on real life, it was just depressing. I was hoping that things would improve after the terrible beginning, but nope. It was based on the horrible behavior of kids running wild and unsupervised (most of the time). Spitting on vehicles, starting fires, stealing things, lying to get what they want, etc. Don't waste your time watching this film unless you don't mind losing 1 hour and half of your life on this mind-numbing movie.

I didn’t like a single character in this movie and there was very little plot. It was so sad and depressing to think about all the kids who live like this in real life that I had to shut it off after an hour.

Bria Vinaite is clearly a rising star. The film is slow but intentional, with an ending that is both heartbreaking and real. More authentic than any I've seen of this year's Oscars buzz.

This was a meandering slice of life film about children who make the most of the sad cards (parents) they're dealt with in life. It's a gritty reality show in comparison to STAND BY ME. However, both films share similar qualities; they beautifully capture the tiny joys of being a kid, just hanging out, finding adventures in the smallest things during one summer. While this film's kids are much younger and don't quite grasp the shame of their social status just yet, or that there futures may be in turmoil, they've seen enough hardship to know how to quickly move on. The three kids, Dafoe and the actress who plays the lead child's mom were wonderful. Recommend.

I agree. Just make it to the ending. All will be revealed. And it doesn't speak highly of the United States. I usually don't enjoy movies where the camera is placed in the point of view of the child, and 50% of this film is shot from the child's perspective. But the acting is terrific, and the editing is mesmerizing. Sadly, this is who we are now. Our road has run out at Cinderella's Castle.

I don't see very many, 'breathe, breathe it's just movie' movie, but the ending was just disturbing. I think of some kid , not all but some, when everything hits the fan where do they run? when institution I took for granted are crumbling like family, religion, schools I know kids that run from cops for no reason. this movie is disturbing but has inspired this grandpa to make a few calls
