This book captured the mood of the country regarding WWII and our involvement and the struggle for FDR to provide assistance to Churchill as he battled the Nazis. It is also about how FRD was able to convert our economy from a peacetime one to a war economy. Sacrifices were asked of every America as rationing and material drives were carried out to provide supplies fro the military effort. While FRD tended to the war the first lady was visiting women workers, promoting blacks for military service and working on worker needs under the new war economy. She fought racism and opposed the rounding up of Japanese Americans. It was a fast moving time and FRD had to deal with a hostile GOP congress until Pearl Harbor. The White House was a busy place with lots of important guests coming and going. Somehow it all worked and America swung the course of the war towards the allies. FRD did it all from a wheel chair. He inspired the nation and provided great leadership. He was elected to four terms. He basically worked himself to death and unfortunately did not get to see the end of the war. The nation mourned his loss.
