The year is 2255. The academy that trained the starfarers is long gone and veteran star pilot Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchins spends her retirement supporting fund-raising efforts for The Prometheus Foundation, a privately funded organization devoted to deep space exploration. But when a young physicist unveils an efficient star drive capable of reaching the core of the galaxy, Hutch finds herself back in the deepest reaches of space, and on the verge of discovering the origins of the deadly Omega clouds that continue to haunt her.

I like his innovative space creatures although his science is a bit far out but if you throw Newtonian physics out the window that allows almost anything to get us faster than the speed of light. Love the way he blithely sacrifices his space ships and the occasional space traveler to the cause, Priscilla best be careful!

That's it? What a cop-out ending. I expected something more.

Cauldron --- by Jack mcDevitt --- When mcDevitt wants to write, for sure he can. This novel has all the elements of classic Science Fiction in the best tradition of Heinlein, Asimov, Farmer and Niven. There’s Science (not fantasy); there’s suspense (will this new-fangled invention actually work?); there’s mystery (just exactly what is this thing?) and there’s plenty of action (you’ll have to discover this for yourself). mcDevitt writes his SF as more than one series: the differences are significant For my money this book from the Academy Novels is the better of the lot: the pace is faster: there’s more going on; its a little more credible (imagine being able to say that about SF). His Wikipedia entry credits him as having written six novels in this series. That means there are four more volumes left to go. Whoopee!
