This book is the exact opposite of Marie Kondo and her book the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Marie comes in and gets rid of everything that doesn't cause joy with the all at once, ripping off a band aid approach. While everything is clean and all excess clutter removed, she doesn't really address the habits that got people in such a mess in the first place. This is where FlyLady is different. Instead of doing everything in days, Flylady says that it took months for your home to get messy, and it's okay to take months to get back on track. FlyLady focuses on adding only one new habit at a time and practicing until that habit is second nature. There were parts of the book I didn't like, I feel like the online version is clearer on which step to add and when, and I also didn't like how she addressed getting your family to help with cleaning. She stated if kids don't do chores, that the mother should just stop being a martyr and just do the child's chores. Not a fan of lazy parenting. While I agree a homemaker shouldn't refrain from cleaning her kitchen for a week because a kid didn't empty the dishwasher, then the parent should step up and make the kid contribute to the house. Other than that, I thought the book has some solid advice and tips for people with homes that need some order.
Love the fly lady. love this book more than the stuff online. I have a hard time sticking to the plan but that is my own doing! the book lays it all out and if you follow it you will be well on your way. Time for me to borrow this book again and get back on track!
Although much of the information I have heard before, I did get a few rock-solid tips.
As the book recommends, I now use a kitchen timer when I am cleaning and organizing. I my not have an hour to clean but with a timer I can squirrel away 5-10-15 minutes at a time and I am amazed how much I get done. I bought timers for each level of my home and I use them nearly every day.
Love Love Love the FlyLady!!!!
Really useful. Her strategy to start by cleaning the kitchen sink is brilliant, and consistent with research that is coming out about the effective way to change habits -- by focussing on a small "keystone" behaviour.
