A valuable narrative non-fiction resource that is also a colorfully illustrated picture book. Puts the mighty redwoods in perspective for k-2nd graders.

If you've ever heard or read a great story, you probably understand what people mean when they say that books transport them to completely different worlds. Well, when the boy in this story finds a book about redwoods on a subway-platform bench, it really happens! The boy begins reading amazing facts about the giant trees while riding the subway, and when he climbs the stairs that lead to the city street, he instead finds himself smack in the middle of a redwood forest. Combining thrilling adventure (in the illustrations) with fascinating facts (in the text), this book is big, big fun.

Having traveled to the redwood forests of California, a young boy follows in the footsteps of a researcher. As he goes he reads the very book we are reading. Each description has an accompanying image that provides a way for a child to grasp the qualities of these giants, in particular are those that use everyday objects, like cars to show the size of the base. There is a clear sense of progression as general facts turn to more specific ones which move from the bottom, to the top of the tree. In addition, creatures dependent on the forest are noted. No book can impart how truly impressive these ancient giants are, but it is a credit to the author that he managed to give a sense of the awe he felt in their presence.
