Robin Murphy is a true loner, completely without friends of any sort, male or female. Thus, he latches on to his new girlfriend Sophie with a near-desperation that makes you feel for him. To his credit, he’s not some crazed stalker. There’s genuine warmth, tenderness, depth of feeling and mutual interest expressed in his poetry to make you understand that she really is the girl for him.

Robin’s poetry indicates a sensitive soul, a boy who aspires to be a painter, one who adores painting, has a goofy sense of fun and a heart wishing for love. He’s not some emo fool even when he wears his heart on his sleeve.

But the poems also convey his increasing yearning for her, bubbling adolescent male hormones and hidden fears when the friends who originally shunned her for being his girlfriend extend their arms to her once more. The poem reads entirely male and just like what you would expect from a teenager who’s trying to handle the first—and only—girlfriend he’s ever had. It’s bittersweet but funny and filled with the ups and downs of someone wrestling with the age-old problem of young love.

This book is a quick read, with its story told in poems. The plot is light and charming and overall it was a fun book to read! Make sure to read the first book, what my mother doesn't know, which is in the point of view of Sophie :)

But Sophie and I figure that maybe, if we can just keep laughing it off whenever those jerks do stuff like that, maybe we can keep it from seeping in, keep it from creeping under our skin. Maybe if we can just laugh instead of shattering, we can somehow keep all from mattering.
