The Point of Rescue (2008)
(The Wrong Mother)
(The third book in the Culver Valley Crime series)
Hooked on Hannah! Now going through the rest of her books and recommending them for escapist summer reading....maybe not so escapist - how women's lives can go from ho-hum "normal" to a nightmare in a heartbeat. Well-written with twisty / twisted plotlines.
The back cover of this book enticed me to read it. Sally Thorning sees a news broadcast; Geraldine Bretherick and her daughter, Lucy, are dead - the result of an apparent murder-suicide. The father, Mark Bretherick, is shown on the news broadcast. The mystery is that Sally had an affair with a man called Mark Bretherick the previous year; a man with a wife called Geraldine and a daughter called Lucy. But this man is not the Mark Bretherick she knew.
What begins as a promising thriller gets convoluted and unbelievable. I was hoping that there would be an interesting twist at the end, rather than something that comes out of left field. The story seemed to unravel near the three-quarter mark and went downhill from there. I will say, however, that Sophie Hannah writes extremely well and others may enjoy the ending more than I did.
I have returned the book!
I enjoyed the book, largely because I mostly had no idea where the author was going with the plot, sort of a roller coaster effect. Maybe a bit on the zany side. The ending is a huge surprise.
Promising start tapers off to an implausible, silly plot and unrealistic characters. However, the diary entries about motherhood / parenting are stark and uncompromisingly honest. That, and only that, makes this book readable.
