Not quite 20, at the end of World War I, Ralph learns he has diabetes. The doctor gives him six months to live. "But if you eat right and get plenty of sunshine, maybe you'll beat my prediction," says the doctor. So Ralph sets out for the West, the "home" he has missed ever since moving to Massachusetts. From flat broke and desperate, to wealthy beyond imagination, to flat broke once more.
