Smart, suspenseful, and unnerving, this book reads like a horror film. It opens with the image of a young woman and two young children, all wearing blindfolds, paddling down a river in a canoe. From there the reader learns that a mysterious plague has devastated civilization, spread when a person sees "something" that no one has been able to identify. Malerman keeps this "something" hidden throughout the book, avoiding the classic mistake made by many horror writers. Paying homage to H.P. Lovecraft and eldritch horror, this is a great read for those who want a page-turning thrill.
