No, this isn't Indiana Jones. But there is something or things about this film that gets under your skin, Maybe it's Paris, maybe it's Corso's monochromatic outfits, the images in the books or Depp's tendency to add comic moments to his otherwise dry character. Maybe it's the inconclusive ending or the questionable soundtrack that gets under your/my skin Maybe it's Emmanuelle Seigner and her dishevelled, mismatched-outfit sexiness. And her smile. Maybe it's the dying collectors of a dying artform who have seen better days but haven't lost their passion for books. Maybe it's Balkan who thinks he can buy the fruits of another man's journey when it's the journey that makes the man and not the man's backers. Maybe it's that the film has a message but it doesn't take itself or the message too seriously. But I like this film. It's about a man with a passion for books that turns into a passion for truth (and not power) and that the man's quest is honorable while he himself is imperfect. What I don't like about the film is that it makes you want to smoke and drink and Corso wouldn't be that thin if he drank that much. Would he? Good color palette.
