The first offering from Studio Ghibli offshoot Studio Ponoc doesn't quite hit the mark, but messy storytelling can't totally overcome the Ghibli-esque charms in this one. And yet, the whole time I kept thinking, "I'd rather be watching Kiki's Delivery Service." Unlike Kiki's Delivery Service, Mary and the Witch's Flower is definitely not for all ages. It starts off sweet and fun and then abruptly ventures into Howl's Moving Castle territory (read: nightmare fuel for little kids). Definitely keep that in mind before showing it to your 5 year old.
