I was uncertain prior to reading this book if I would enjoy it, given that I have seen the movie. I was pleasantly surprised that the book was significantly better than the movie. I loved the way that the author used such description when describing the various scenes within each chapter. The details that were provided allowed me as a reader to fully envision as if I was there on the mysterious island myself. I would recommend this book to readers that enjoy suspense, mystery, and fantasy. Personally, I would not change anything about the writing of this story! Although it was intense reading this at times, I felt engaged and honestly could not put the book down. While the main character (16-year-old Jacob) learns about his peculiarity, along with the abandoned island and the series of events that occurred here, you will be intrigued to learn along with him. It was thrilling to find out about the Hollows. I loved to see the photographs included in the chapters, as they corresponded so well with the story. I give this book a rating of 4.5 stars. -@GemsOfIvy of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review BoardI was uncertain prior to reading this book if I would enjoy it, given that I have seen the movie. I really enjoyed this book. I waited for a while to read this book, and I was not disappointed when I got the chance. I would highly recommend this book to readers. It is not extremely long, and engages the reader to continuously want more. I specifically liked the twists in this book, which made me extremely engaged in the book. A warning for readers is that this book does contain violence scenes, and does involve aspects of suicide, so it could be triggering to some readers. The main characters were interesting, and well thought out which makes the story more interesting. The themes of the book were also well thought out and explained. It did not feel like a book, more like a day to day as a psychotherapist. It was different from other crime books I have read, as it does not just talk about the crime, but goes into depth about the mind of the patient. If you get the chance, I would give this book a try. I rate this book a 5/5 stars. -@mdawg of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review BoardI really enjoyed this book. Napoleon Dynamite is a fun, timeless movie, about just some guy. Some guy with a weird family, weird friends, and a weird life. Yet, with these weird circumstances and the occasional second-hand embarrassment, you learn to appreciate the oddities and watch Napoleon grow into this more confident person, along with his friends, and brother, who was apart of a good payoff side gag that was funny. With the small town, stereotypical setting of any movie focusing on a nerdy, awkward guy in high school, the movie works with what is must set itself out from the crowd and be recognized as a light viewing classic. The dialogue is unique and funny, and the soundtrack sets the scene. 4/5

This book was absolutely brilliant! I soaked it in word for word, and could not put this book down until I had read every last bit of it! The emotions of this book still have me struck over how Cassandra Clare was able to make the emotions on the page seem so real to me as a reader. The emotions of pain, love, happiness and grief that I felt through this book will always stay with me until the end. I have read all of Cassandra Clare’s book series, but by far this book series is well thought and incredibly written. It captures the exact emotions, feelings, and experiences to the smallest detail. My heart was ripped only to be sewn back in multiple times during this book. I loved the entire experience. If you are new to this trilogy, I would recommend reading Lady Midnight previous to this book, Lord of Shadows. 5 stars

Girl In Snow is a great story and I recommend to readers who are looking for a suspenseful mysterious story. The layout of the plot is quite simple, personally I have seen this kind of story done before. Danya Kukafka uses descriptive words and language to paint pictures inside the reader's mind to understand the story. This novel is not one I would read again but I think it is worth reading once, to see the electrifying mystery come together. I would also give Kukafka’s other books a read, as I have started reading another one of her works and am enjoying it so far, as Girl In Snow is only her first novel. 3 Stars

All I can say is wow, what a movie. From the very opening scene, Kissing Candice exhibits such a mysterious yet beautiful aura that had me right on the edge of my seat. The red glow of certain moments in the film, causing you to question the reality of what you are watching, is so greatly intense, I couldn’t bring myself to look away. As we follow along in Candice’s story, the entire film unravels parts of a mystery you didn’t even know you were trying to solve. The score of the film is also one of the best I’ve heard in a long time, blending every scene so beautifully together. This film engulfed me as I watched it, I felt as though I was witnessing everything right there along with Candice, as she slowly uncovers the mystery of what she saw in her dream. I think this film is criminally underrated and way more people need to praise Aoife McArdle for this incredible piece of art. Along with Ann Skelly, this incredible story was brought to life so vibrant and intense, I really hope to find another film like this one day. Rate: 4.5/5

Another great read from Stephen King. In his second book of the Mr. Mercedes trilogy, Stephen King grabbed my attention from the very first chapter. Although the first book was very intense and gory, this story brought a different level of fear into the work of detective Bill Hodges. His team consisting of Bill, Holly and Jerome return for another adventure in this book, one that has much more than they know about in store. This story is based around Morris Bellamy, a crazed fan of John Rothstein’s work and his mission to find the books he stole from him after he gets out of jail. I really enjoyed just how detailed Stephen King’s character descriptions are, and how no matter what perspective he puts the story in, you feel connected to that character, like you are a part of their universe for the time you read about them. This was a very gripping, intense and obviously scary, story to read, but I enjoyed every second of it, and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series. Rate: 3.5/5

Knives out is a murder mystery movie about a brilliant detective (Daniel Craig) trying to figure out who killed famous mystery author Harlan Thrombey, and about Harlan’s greedy family trying to inherit his large fortune. This movie is very entertaining because of the plot twists, the interesting characters, and the props and easter eggs strategically placed around the set, that are sometimes clues to what might happen later in the movie. I really liked how the movie uses camera angles as a tool to enhance conversations between characters. I would recommend this to families and kids that are 10 and older (because of the profanity). I think this is a good family movie because the movie is about a family in itself! This movie made me feel like I was reading an Agatha Christie detective novel or playing the boardgame ‘Clue’. The moral/ message you can learn from the story is to live life with a kind heart because you never know what might happen! I give this movie 5/5 rating!

Having read a number of Stephen King novels, The Gunslinger certainly lives up to King’s legacy in storytelling. Though it was slow to me for a lot of the time, the idea of a western fantasy continued to draw me in as I read. It is the first book of three, and for a start, it does well to capture interest despite the flaws. The atmosphere within the story was intense as it follows Ronald Deschain (the last of the Gunslingers) as he trails a Man in Black and quests after the Dark Tower. Ronald, as the main character, makes some decisions that raise questions, and honestly, he was unlikeable at points. I believe that was the whole basis of his character, and he certainly lived up to it. Some parts of the plot are unclear (why is he trying to get to the Dark Tower?) But I’m certain this would be answered in the sequels. 3/5 stars

Wow. Riordan strikes again. The fourth book in the Heroes of Olympus series kicks off strong as it follows Annabeth and Percy as well as the crew of the Argo II as they race against impossible odds. Annabeth and Percy are tested over and over again through their journey in Tartarus. It's well-written and I found myself looking forward to each chapter and what lies ahead for the demigods. It all leads up to the final book in the series and the tension shows as each point of view swaps into high-strung situations. It reminded me of Percy Jackson and the Olympians (although with more POVs) and why I had gotten into the series in the first place. I give this book a 4/5 stars.

Fablehaven is a book by Brandon Mull and the first in a series following two siblings. A 13-year-old named Kendra and 11-year-old Seth. Now, in terms of the premise of this first book, the summary drew me in. It promised fantasy. Action. Adventure. It delivered, though I was disappointed that it mostly followed the siblings and the misadventures they got into. I wasn’t expecting shenanigans from two grandchildren of the caretaker of a realm. In fact, I was hoping more for the showcase of what exactly the caretaker does. That is, admittedly, my own fault for presuming something like that. I would have to give it a 2/5 due to the nature of the author’s writing and it not living up to my own expectations.

I am a fan of twisted fairytale stories and Dorothy Must Die is a novel that drew my attention due to the title. It implies that, well, Dorothy, an important character from the original story, has to be killed. Instead of Dorothy, the main character is Amy Gumm who is swept up by a tornado in Kansas. The world of Oz is incredibly different from the movies and original story, along with the beloved characters. Overall, it is a welcome change. It is full of gore and humour, fully cementing the idea that it is “twisted.” Even though Paige certainly knew not to skimp on details, the ending of this novel seemed rushed to me after I processed everything that happened in the overall story. Since it is book one of four, I don’t particularly fault it for being a bit speedy. There were aspects of the novel that prevented me from being fully immersed in the setting and emotions of the characters, influencing my decision to give this book 3/5 stars.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is about Miyuki, a poor yet intelligent boy and Kaguya, a rich and serious girl. They are both the stern leaders of the student council and both have a crush on each other. Miyuki and Kaguya both believe that the first to confess is considered weaker and subordinate. So, they fight each other in an indirect way to make the other confess first. Since they are both so clever, it makes for an oddly hilarious and interesting story. Their psychological warfare keeps you guessing, but not in a way that'll hurt your brain. It's enough for you to be shocked and then amused in a short span of time. Their mini battles and banter was very endearing and I found myself wanting to see more. Their personalities were very thought out and intricate. They are all amazingly unique and funny, which made a fantastic story. 21 is Adele’s second studio album released on January 24 2011. Adele wrote and collaborated with other songwriters and producers as she began to record the album. Most of the album was based and inspired by her own experiences in her relationships and you can feel and hear how much she hurt. The album also has a fair share of upbeat contemporary songs apart from her sad love songs. It serves as a great transition from the initial heartbreak she experienced in the beginning of the album and is on her way to healing from the pain. I remember the first time I heard “Set Fire to the Rain”, I was so immersed in her voice and fell in love immediately with her and have been a fan since. The overall aesthetic of the album reminds me of an old movie in the 1980s and a heartbroken woman trying to get over her old lover and move on but goes back and forth with her emotions. I think “Love Song” and “Someone Like You” paint that picture with the acoustic guitar and the piano along with melancholy lyrics. I am surprised to see how bad the nun really is after all those great conjuring movies we have had in the past. The Nun finds the most generic horror cliches and shoves them at your face, constantly relying on very cheap and ineffective jump scares. This movie most likely won’t scare any avid horror fan, I can only see the scares working on people who are new to the horror genre and aren’t familiar with the horror cliches. This movie’s plot is also incredibly weak and executed terribly, not only that, but the bland and uninteresting characters make this movie a chore to sit through. Having played Persona 4, Persona 5 has made a lot of improvements from its previous entry. Firstly, this game is brimming with style, everything is so colorful. The menus, GUIs, animation, art style, everything is so visually appealing and stunning that it completely immerses you in it’s world right from the get go. What’s even better is that this time Atlus ditches randomized dungeons from the past 2 games and introduces fully scripted dungeons with cool puzzles and new features. The combat is also massively improved from the past game and feels a lot more fleshed out. However, persona 5’s main draw is it’s story, the story is phenomenal and there are many twists and turns to keep players engaged. What’s even better about this game is it’s cast of characters, they are written extremely well and are VERY easy to get attached to. Moreover, the social sim elements of the game keep you constantly hooked and leaves you craving for more. Aside from some minor camera issues and weak tutorials, this game is a masterpiece that JRPG fans will LOVE. Persona 5 is my favourite game of all time and it deserves all the praise it gets. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald holds an abundance of things, that are still prevalent within today’s society. Personally, I enjoyed the book throughout. It portrayed several themes that the reader can fall into; the one most prevalent being the American Dream. It is a classic book that anyone 15+ should read; it shows the troubles that the characters surrounding the protagonist, Nick Carraway go through, through the lust for money and love. Fitzgerald could have possibly worked on making the beginning chapters more interesting, but overall he worked hard and gave the moral message that the American dream was not attainable back in the 1920s, just as it is not attainable now, in the 21st century. I agree strongly with this take as it is so expensive just to live; especially in the U.S. By the end of the novel I was deep within the book and I just had to get to the end of the novel! Furthermore, Fitzgerald wrote perfectly about the past and brought in key parts of history that individuals can learn in an American History course, hence the rating of 15+. This book, again, is a classic and truly encapsulates the energy that has been relived in our world, nearly a century later. 3.5/5 stars

Definitions of Indefinable Things by Whitney Taylor is a book filled with a rollercoaster of emotions. It is a gravitating book, to say the least as I simply couldn’t put it down. It was interesting to see Reggie, the main protagonist travel through her life and the endeavours she had to go through as well, whether that was meeting Snake Eliot, another protagonist or attempting a friendship with Carla Banks. Taylor manages to speak on issues that still face teens to this day, especially mental health [in this current pandemic], through the depression of Snake and Reggie and how they face it in a real, and raw way. The message throughout this book is that it’s okay to struggle with yourself as the mind is a vast place, filled with millions of thoughts and I agree with the concept entirely. This book is for 14+, high school-aged students as it follows the characters who are in high school themselves (11th grade) and individuals may be able to relate to something within the plot. Taylor also conveyed 3 unlikeable characters at the beginning, but by the end, the reader may adore one or all. Better Call Saul season 3 is definitely the best one yet, showcasing all of its strengths and putting them on full display. It introduces a couple new characters (including one big character from Breaking Bad) and uses them all pretty well. It starts out great, and continues to be great throughout most of the entire season (with the exception of a couple episodes here and there). This season has the best episode of the entire show so far, called chicanery (episode 5). It is a near perfect episode because of the incredible writing. I never noticed how good the writing was until this episode came along. The slow burn of the show is mostly worth it just to see this episode and see the last 5-10 minutes of it, which is an almost perfect television moment. But other than that it has some other great episodes, such as the final one, which ends on an extremely dark note. Overall, Better Call Saul season 3 improves all the issues of the last 2 seasons and polishes them out. The 5th episode is incredible, and this episode (as well as the entire season) has some great character development and showcases how good the writing is. It seems that every season is getting better and better, so hopefully season 4 follows that. 4/5 stars

The 2nd season of Better Call Saul improves a lot on the issues the first season has. The storyline is much more interesting and kept me engaged throughout. Both Mike and Saul's storylines were more interesting, especially Sauls. His storyline was weaker compared to Mikes in season 1, but now i would say that they are both equal (I still think Mike's is a bit better). This season has more memorable episodes, such as the episode titled cobbler, which has some very funny moments. The show is still not living up to the extremely high bar breaking bad sets, but that won't happen for a while I dont think. But overall, Better Call Saul season 2 takes the issues of season 1 and improves to a greater amount. While it is not a perfect season, it is definitely more interesting than season 1. Just Another Girl is a realistic story told from two perspectives (and briefly a third) that shows how bias and perception can influence how we see those around us. It involves a love triangle that leads to resentment — but, on the other side, is a character who has her own difficulties. It places emphasis on the truth that very few are intentionally mean, and how much of our views of others stem from unconscious judgment. The storylines flowed realistically well, with additional uniqueness with the focus on Rube Goldberg machines. This would be new to many and is interesting to read about. The two main characters both were relatable; while Hope shares similar struggles to many girls, Parker was a kind, positive character who has immediate appeal. Though Hope’s narration came across as slightly complaining in some parts, she shows satisfying change by the end. The messages came through strong without being heavy-handed, and the ending was hopeful yet grounded. It is a story that may make readers “think” about their actions and become more empathetic to others. The moral of appreciating all that we have is also implied well. The small-town setting felt authentic and warm, with no “antagonists” making this a contemporary story beyond stereotypes. Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
